I love this fucking album. It gets so many things right, and I'm perplexed by how little attention it received in 2015. Hailing from Austria, Amestigon have been active since 1995, making it all the more puzzling to me that I've never heard of them.
Okay, so…confession: This show was the first time I've seen King Diamond live. That fact seems a little strange to me since I've been a fan since the release of Mercyful Fate's Melissain 1983 – 32 years ago…wow – but for whatever reason the stars have just never lined up.
Anyone who knows me is probably familiar with the fact that I'm a progressive rock fan as much as I am a metal head. I have been a prog fan since my early days of music exploration. On any given day during high school, it wouldn't be out of the norm to spin Screaming for Vengeance by Judas Priest...
Hi, everyone. Before I start this review, I should introduce myself – my name is Mark, and I'm the "Spotify playlist guy" for the METALHEADS Podcast, for whatever that's worth. I am very grateful to George, Buke and Jay for even mentioning the playlists on the podcast, let alone asking me if I wanted to write a review...
French black metal rarely disappoints, and Maïeutiste's self-titled debut is no exception. This is a massive record both in terms of length as well as musical scope. Clocking in at over 1 hour and 16 minutes...
A few days ago I found myself, as I so often do, scouring the landscape of Bandcamp in search of quality music that had not yet graced my ears. On the METALHEADS Podcast, we frequently make reference to Bandcamp as a wonderful resource for heavy metal music discovery...
If you are a person like me, you spend countless hours scouring through a multitude of music sites and reviews looking for something new and exciting. On occasion, you find some decent music that fell through the cracks. If you are lucky, you stumble across an album...
Late last year Monster Magnet released Milking the Stars: A Reimagining of Last Patrol, a serious reworking of their fine 2013 album. Apparently Dave was on a tangent because he's rolled right on into the tapes from the previous album...
We dig through a lot of promos on the METALHEADS Podcast, and while thankfully gems do appear there, it’s awfully nice to stumble across a good record out in the wide world that you know nothing about, and that nobody in particular was trying to get you to listen to.
I cannot think of any artist or band that upon entering the later years of their career have not had to suffer complaints from critics or fans suggesting they may not be able to live up to the expectations set during their younger years.
Love it, hate it or indifferent, one metal album you have probably heard discussed this year is the full-length debut, _M_, from Myrkur. What started as a murmur with last year's self-titled EP has slowly gained volume this year...
One of my pet peeves is the need that some people have to try to legitimize heavy metal as an art form by comparing it to other styles of music. I’ve read more than a few articles over the years that point out the similarity in structure of metal and classical...
I suspect that anyone reading this or listening to the Metal Heads Podcast would not get the notion that hair metal is a big priority for me. They would be correct in that assessment. My tastes these days run toward a harder, faster...
I know I titled this “The 100 Best Metal Albums of 2014”, but I did that mostly so the search engines might pick up on it more and then more people may see this list. What this list really is, though, are my personal favorite 100 albums of 2014.
Several months ago I was drawn to Washington, D.C. by the promise of a prog metal version of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd being staged by The Landless Theatre Company.
I do not normally bother myself with EPs. Not because there is anything inherently wrong with them; they can certainly tide you over during a long stretch between albums. For example, one of my favorite EPs...
Living in the Maryland/Virginia/D.C. area I feel lucky to have a steady stream of the world’s best metal bands frequently visiting the region. While it is wonderful to have this unprecedented access...
If you’ve listened to our Metalheads podcast recently you may be aware that there have been some bands over the years that I used to really dump on, but that in more recent times I have come to better understand and even appreciate.
Last year during my 365 Days of Metal video project, I covered Milwaukee, Wisconsin band Arctic Sleep and their fourth album, “Arbors.” I came across the band on Bandcamp...
Last week saw the release of “Clawing into Black Sun” the third album from Minneapolis/Chicago band Wolvhammer. I wasn’t exactly waiting with baited breath for a new Wolvhammer album, but it was in the back of my mind that I wanted to hear how they may have evolved.
This week marks the release of the ninth album from Chicago’s Novembers Doom, “Bled White.” I have to admit I have been waiting for this album with much anticipation. I first came across Novembers Doom...
I was on vacation last week so I didn’t get any reviews written, but one of my favorite things to do while passing time at the beach is to stare out over the ocean and listen to bands I haven’t heard before.
The Greek symphonic death metal band Septicflesh first came to my attention three years ago with the release of their eighth album, “The Great Mass.” I know; where was I for those first...
As one who constantly sifts through seemingly endless piles of new metal releases from bands all around the world, I often feel like I am hearing the same things over and over and over again.
Bloody Hammers from Charlotte, North Carolina have returned with their third album, “Under Satan’s Sun.” In case you are wondering, this is a big deal. Bloody Hammers is turning out to be quite...
If one searches for the name Maelstrom on the Metal Archives website, one gets a list of twenty seven bands all bearing the name; I guess it is a rather popular nom de plume.
Of all the new metal releases this week, the only one that really stood out to me was Darkest Era and their second album, “Severance.” Darkest Era hail from Ireland and play metal infused with a Celtic flavor.
Kirk Windstein. The man. The legend. You may only know him for his epic beard, but believe it or not he is also a talented musician. Do you like sludge metal? You can thank Kirk for that...
Today I bring you the third review in a row featuring an unsigned band. Perhaps this is the result of my obsessive compulsion to constantly seek out new bands and music, driving me to hunt...
In the latter half of 2014, I took my wife to see the Landless Theatre Company's prog metal production of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Not only was the show fantastic...
